The Island's Wildlife

  • Monkeys

The Vervet monkeys that can be found on the island were brought here as part of the Primate Behavioral Research Center. They were released rather than relocated when the Center closed. Many of the monkeys still exhibit the communications “skills” they acquired during the research, which makes interacting with them both fun and fascinating.

  • Sharks

Although the waters surrrounding the island are home to a variety of sharks, the one you’re most likely to encounter is the Caribbean reef shark. But if you do, don’t panic. The reef shark rarely attacks humans, much preferring to dine on bony fish.

  • Parrots

We know you’ll see a Yellow-Headed Amazon while you’re here, because that’s the kind of parrot Coucou is. As our unofficial doorman, Coucou greets new arrivals from her perch in the lobby, repeating things she’s heard over the years with human-like precision.

  • Jellyfish

Many varieties of “jellies” inhabit the Caribbean, floating on or just under the water’s surface in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Most have umbrella or bell-shaped tops, from which trail tentacles which, if a careless swimmer, snorkeler or diver brushes against them, can cause painful, and sometimes fatal, stings.

  • Octopus

The Common Atlantic octopus is indeed common in these waters. Despite the fact that it can grow to be 10 feet long from tentacle tip to tentacle tip, you’ll have to look closely to spot one. Not only does its coloring change to blend in with its surroundings, but it spends much of its time hiding out in holes and crevasses in reefs.
